India have made a commanding start to the three-match ODI series against West Indies. In the first match in Thiruvananthapuram, India chased down a target of 296 with eight wickets to spare, built on Virat Kohli's unbeaten 139 and Shubman Gill's 110.
Batting first, West Indies were given a strong start by openers Justin Greaves and John Campbell, who put on 135 for the first wicket. Campbell made 62 and Greaves struck a century of 101. A late half-century of 58 from Amir Jangoo took West Indies to 295 for 7 in their 50 overs.
In the chase, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 74 for the opening wicket. After Rohit fell for 32, Gill and Kohli shared a century stand for the second wicket that tilted the game towards India. Once Gill was dismissed for 110, Kohli carried the innings with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who rotated the strike with singles and twos.
Returning to international cricket after a long break, Kohli brought up both his fifty and his hundred with sixes. He needed only 74 balls for the century, his 55th in ODIs. During the innings he also became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 runs in ODI cricket.
The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
