The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has refuted allegations that it is using potable water to clean medians along the BRT corridors in the city. The Municipal Corporation clarified that treated water from sewage treatment plants is being utilized for this purpose. According to Pune News, the PCMC issued this clarification following public criticism regarding water usage for median cleaning, particularly as the city is currently under a 10% water cut.
The PCMC stated that accumulated soil, dust, and debris on the medians obscure reflective strips, posing a risk to road safety. A recent incident where a school bus collided with a BRT railing highlighted the importance of clearly visible medians. Therefore, this cleaning is deemed essential for passenger safety and the aesthetic appeal of the roads.
Additionally, this cleaning drive is also part of the preparations for the Pune Grand Tour 2027 cycling competition. However, the Municipal Corporation emphasized that this is a routine maintenance process necessary for passenger safety. Bapusaheb Gaikwad of the Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to conserve drinking water and cooperate with the PCMC's efforts.
