Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad cities may face water cuts following directives from the state government. Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan announced that water cuts would be implemented across the state from October 16.
Pimpri-Chinchwad city currently operates on an alternate-day water supply, facing a daily deficit of 105 MLD. The Water Resources Department has instructed a 10% reduction in water allocation, which means an additional 10% water cut is likely to be implemented in the city from October 16. This cut has resulted in housing societies in Wakad receiving only 50% of their required water, prompting citizens to demand a full water supply. Previously, a 15% water cut imposed due to delayed rains was not withdrawn even when dams were 100% full in July.
Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is awaiting a written order from the state government before deciding on water cuts. PMC officials stated that the frequency and extent of water cuts would be determined within a week of receiving the order. The collective water stock in Pune district dams is one TMC less compared to last year, but with proper planning, water can last until July, according to Punekar News. The PMC is prepared to implement weekly water shutdowns if necessary.
