The Pune Grand Tour has been upgraded by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) from UCI 2.2 to UCI 2.1. This upgrade is expected to attract stronger international teams and cyclists to the competition, providing Indian cyclists with an opportunity to compete against experienced international athletes. According to Punekar News, the second edition of this six-stage road cycling race will be held from January 26 to 31, 2027.

The significance of this competition has further increased as Pune city has been awarded the hosting rights for the UCI Road World Championships in 2027. This will be the first time the championship is hosted in India. The first Pune Grand Tour, held in January 2026, saw 29 teams and 171 cyclists from 35 countries participate, with approximately 2.5 million spectators attending the event.

The 2027 competition will traverse various areas within Pune district, including Mulshi, Hinjawadi, Baramati, Saswad, Junnar, Rajgurunagar, Alandi, Lonavala-Khandala, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Balgandharva Rangmandir. These routes will encompass urban roads, rural areas, historical sites, hilly regions, and challenging sections of the Western Ghats.

Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced preparations for 136 km of roads for the Pune Grand Tour 2027. According to Punekar News, utility agencies have been instructed to complete all excavation work by October 31. No further excavation will be permitted on the route after this deadline.
