A court has sentenced accused Subojit Basu to life imprisonment for strangling his sister to death. The police investigation and judicial follow-up proved crucial in this case, which occurred about 16 years ago under the jurisdiction of the Hinjawadi police station.
The incident took place in the early hours of April 14, 2010, at Aparajita Society in Shindenagar. Frustrated by business losses, the accused attempted suicide. When his 23-year-old sister opposed him, he strangled her to death and then attempted suicide by slitting his own wrist.
The then investigating officer, Police Sub-Inspector R. T. Pawar, filed the chargesheet based on evidence and witness statements. As per the directives of Commissioner of Police Vinay Kumar Choubey, this matter was selected as a "Star Case" and its responsibility was entrusted to Senior Police Inspector Balaji Pandhare. Public Prosecutor Leena Pathak represented the state.
Considering the evidence and testimonies, the court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 under IPC Section 302. The court also ordered an additional 1-month imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
