According to the complaint, the suspect contacted the woman through an Instagram account and befriended her. He gained her trust by pretending to be wealthy and promising marriage.
He then began demanding money by emotionally manipulating her and citing various reasons. Trusting him, the woman transferred a total of Rs 8,14,000 in installments through online transactions.
Upon realizing she had been duped, she approached the Kalewadi police station. The police have registered a case against the account holder and launched an investigation.
The police regularly urge citizens to remain cautious if someone they meet on social media asks for money. In the event of such a fraud, victims are advised to immediately report it to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or on the website cybercrime.gov.in.
