According to the foundation's memorandum, although the city has a large number of pet dogs, the number of those officially registered with the municipal corporation is extremely low. It stated that the risk of rabies increases as many dogs are not vaccinated and cared for properly.
Dogs are left to roam freely in slums, chawls, rehabilitation buildings, and around roadside shops, garages, and hotels. The memorandum notes that this poses a threat to senior citizens, children, and two-wheeler riders, adding that packs of dogs are also causing accidents.
Ganesh Jagtap, founder-president of the foundation, said that the rules regarding keeping dogs should not remain on paper but must be strictly implemented. He added that the issue of citizens' safety will not be resolved unless strict action is taken.
He also warned that if the municipal corporation fails to take action, they will approach the court. It is mandatory to obtain a municipal license and ensure regular vaccination for pet dogs.
