Although the country gained independence on August 15, 1947, the people of the Hyderabad State remained under the Nizam's rule for another 13 months. Marathwada was liberated from the Nizam's rule on September 17, 1948. To remember the sacrifices of the martyrs in this struggle, the Central Government has decided through a gazette notification to celebrate this day every year.
The city hosts various programs at the municipal level for national days, as well as the birth and death anniversaries of great personalities. However, Arun Pawar has questioned why tributes to martyrs, lectures, history exhibitions, or student awareness activities are not organized for September 17.
This day is not limited to a single region but is an important chapter in the history of the country's integration. Therefore, Pawar stated that it should be celebrated as a day of history and national integration, rather than being viewed through any political framework.
He has suggested to the municipal corporation that organizing lectures, essay competitions, history exhibitions, felicitations for the families of freedom fighters, and public awareness programs in schools and colleges will educate the new generation about this struggle. A response from the municipal corporation regarding this is not yet available.
