A shocking incident occurred on Saturday night, October 12, 2026, when a homeless patient fell from an ambulance while being transferred from Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pimpri to Sassoon General Hospital. According to Pune Mirror News, the patient was being moved to Sassoon Hospital because YCM Hospital lacked the necessary facilities for his treatment. The incident took place outside YCM Hospital.
The main reasons for this incident were the unlocked wheels of the stretcher in the ambulance and the rear door not being properly closed. More alarmingly, the staff member accompanying the patient was seated in the front, while the ambulance continued for approximately 90 seconds. A police officer was also present in the ambulance. Citizens recorded a video of the incident on their mobile phones on October 11, 2026, which subsequently went viral. Although the video does not clearly show the extent of the patient's injuries, the incident has raised serious questions about ambulance safety protocols and the responsibility of patient transport.
Dr. Rajendra Wabale of YCM Hospital has issued notices to the ambulance driver and one staff member following the incident. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) operates YCM Hospital. Citizens have demanded strict action against the ambulance driver and the hospital administration. This incident has sparked concerns regarding patient safety and ambulance operational procedures.
