The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has started imposing daily fines on the contractor of the Moshi waste-to-energy plant after it failed to resume operations by the extended deadline of September 30. According to Punekar News, the plant has been non-operational for the past four months due to a chimney collapse, which has further intensified the city's waste management challenges.

The plant processes approximately 700 tons of dry waste daily and generates 14 megawatts of electricity. It has been shut down since June 5, when its chimney collapsed. This has placed significant strain on waste management, especially given the limited capacity of the 81-acre Moshi dumping ground.

According to officials from the PCMC's Environment Engineering Department, the contractor, Antony Lara Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd., had requested a one-month period for repairs in July 2023. Subsequently, they were given a final deadline to restart the project by September 30. However, as the plant had not resumed operations by October 1, the municipal corporation began levying daily fines on the contractor.

PCMC has a 21-year agreement with the contractor. Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi had previously inspected the plant on July 8. The current status of the plant has worsened the waste disposal problem in Pimpri-Chinchwad city.
