Costa Rica Cooperative Society in Wakad has launched a ‘Zero Waste’ initiative to protect the environment and promote sustainable development. The project was inaugurated by Corporator Rahul Kalate. Through this initiative, the society will focus on scientific, sustainable, and eco-friendly waste management.
The initiative is supported by the ‘SORT’ program under the Mothers Company’s CSR. In the initial phase, aero bins, stands, cocopeat, and other necessary materials will be provided to process wet waste. Waste management staff will be given three months of training on waste segregation, processing, maintenance, and production management.
An eleven-member ‘Zero Waste Committee’ has been formed for this project, comprising Rohit Sawant, Pravin Chhetri, Gaurav Suryavanshi, Digambar Bodke, Prasad Ane, Sonali Tembe, Girish Shinde, Sudeep Kar Gupta, Raju Sharma, Samir Pawat, and Nilesh Ghinmine. The committee's primary responsibility will be to create awareness among residents, provide information on waste segregation, distribute leaflets, and monitor the stages of waste management.
Currently, the project focuses on the segregation of wet and dry waste. In the future, there are plans to coordinate with organizations that recycle bio-waste, plastic, other recyclable waste, and e-waste to manage them independently. The initiative was launched during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
